In the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West (西游记), Lion Camel Ridge (狮驼岭) is a significant location. It is the site of one of the major confrontations between the pilgrims and powerful adversaries during their journey to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures. Lion Camel Ridge is inhabited by three fearsome demons, often referred to as the Three Demon Kings of Lion Camel Ridge: The King of the Lion Demon (狮子精), who is the leader. The King of the Camel Demon (骆驼精). The King of the Leopard Demon (豹精). These demons are powerful and have taken control of the area, capturing travelers and making trouble for the monk Xuanzang (Tang Seng) and his disciples (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing). The demons are ultimately defeated by the pilgrims, with the help of some divine intervention.
