A long time ago, there were two armies: the Israelites and the Philistines. They were ready to fight in a valley. The Philistines had a giant named Goliath. He was very tall and strong, and he scared everyone. Every day, Goliath shouted, “Send someone to fight me! If he wins, we will serve you. But if I win, you will serve us!” The Israelites were afraid. No one wanted to fight Goliath. David was a young shepherd boy. He was not a soldier but took care of sheep. One day, David went to bring food to his brothers, who were soldiers in the Israelite army. He heard Goliath’s challenge and saw everyone was afraid. David said, “I will fight him!” King Saul, the leader of the Israelites, was surprised. “You are just a boy,” he said. “You cannot fight this giant!” But David replied, “I take care of my sheep, and when lions or bears come to attack, I protect them. God helped me then, and He will help me now!” The king agreed and gave David his armor. But the armor was too heavy, so David did not wear it. Instead, he took his sling and five smooth stones from a stream. David went to face Goliath. The giant laughed and said, “Do you think I’m a dog? You come to fight me with sticks?” David answered, “You come with a sword and spear, but I come in the name of God. Today, God will help me defeat you!” David put a stone in his sling and swung it. The stone flew and hit Goliath on the forehead. Goliath fell to the ground, and David ran to him, took Goliath’s sword, and killed him. The Philistines saw their giant was dead, and they ran away. The Israelites cheered for David. He became a hero because he trusted in God and was brave. From that day, David’s life changed, and he eventually became a great king.
